A sequel to the movie is yet to be made, but Big Hero 6 was revealed as a game world for Kingdom Hearts 3 in 2015, and a follow-up TV show titled Big Hero 6: The Series ran from November 2017 to February this year. In 2020, the spinoff series Baymax! was announced but today its release window on the Disney Plus streaming service was confirmed: Summer 2022. Baymax! will also be in the CG style of the movie, rather than the 2D animation of Big Hero 6: The Series.

A Tweet from Disney Plus reads, “A big hero will rise ●—● Baymax!, an Original Series, is streaming Summer 2022,” and features the first official trailer for Baymax! In the teaser, the beloved healthcare companion bumbles his way around the fictional San Fransokyo as he tries his best to help its residents in need. Baymax takes a hilarious turn trying to run Aunt Cass’s busy Lucky Cat Cafe after she is injured and the result is not a huge success, to say the least. It seems like a crowd-pleasing return for the huggable hero and may be seen as a refreshing break from the large amount of live-action remakes from Disney Plus.
Big Hero 6 arrived in theatres in 2014 and was the first animated film from Disney to feature characters from Marvel Comics after Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009. The movie originally started as a little-known comic that director Don Hall stumbled across on a search of the Marvel database in 2011, but it went on to win Best Animated Feature at the 87th Academy Awards in 2015. Critics and movie-goers alike were charmed by its lovingly crafted combination of fast-paced action and emotional heart, with the character of Baymax emerging as the real star. His gentle demeanor and wholesome antics endeared him to audiences, so the creation of a series centered on him is an astute move on the part of Disney, sure to bring in the viewers. Executive Chairman Bob Iger has recently defended Disney’s streaming shift.
The series may, however, suffer from a lack of apparent action, as the focus seems to be on Baymax and the everyday situations he gets himself into, bumbling innocently around. It is perhaps not as exciting as the action-focused movie, where the character strapped his shiny red armor on to soar across the city and, among other heroics, catch people from falling buildings. But TV series based on superhero films are proving to be popular, with even the Eternals screenwriters wanting to make a Disney Plus prequel series.
The short trailer for Baymax! is all audiences have to go on for now, with no other details announced around the series anyhow. However, the joyfully calm presence of lovable Baymax is sure to be a big draw.
Baymax! is due to be released on Disney Plus in Summer 2020.
